Introductory week

September - Week 1
Task 1 - Review of past students work

  1. Look at Unit 1 & 2 Presentation baords - this is the work that Year 12 produced last year in response to the Units of work you will undertake this year.
  2. Look at the sketchbooks produced by these students in conjunction with their presentation boards. This will give you an understanding of what you will be doing throughout the corse this year.
  3. Take a look at the information below - Assessment objectives, General assessment Unit 1 & 2 Presentation boards.
  4. Have a short group / class discussion on the work in order to gain a grasp of the course in more detail.
Task 2 - Review of your own skills and interests that relate to Fashion Design
Production of presentation boards
  1. Using the magazines available, the internet (should you need to) produce a series of presentation boards on A3 paper that presents to the rest of the class your own interests in Fashion design and the surrounding subjects. Look at:
  • What Fashion / Textile designers inspire you
  • What Artists you like (try and use a traditional artist as well as a contemporary artist (again, if you are unsure, investigate further - use key words and search the internet or use the books that are available in the classroom)
  • What Textile techniques you are familiar with and what techniques you may not have used but would like to investigate
  • What design movements / eras interest you.
  • Other areas that inspire your work Architecture, organic themes, cultures historical issues, trends, etc...the list could go on and on!
Don't worry if you do not immediately know all of the answers, or struggle with certain aspects of what as been asked of you....even the students who's wonderful work you have looked at can still find some of these areas difficult...a successful Fashion design student will be constantly be earning and for ever finding new ideas to inspire them.

An example of a response form one student for the above may be:
  • Fashion / Textile designers - Shelly Fox, Marc Jacobs, Dries Van Noten, Aquascutum, Vivienne Westwood, Miu Miu, Burberry, Russel Sage, Jessica Ogden
  • Artists - Cezanne, Matisse, Gustav, Klutsis, Damien Hirst, Yoshitomo Nara, Antony Gormley, Fred Williams, Ernst-Wilhelm Nay, Simryn Gill
  • Textile Techniques - reworking vintage materials, burning and manipulation of fabrics, felting, embroidery, gathering, bonding, applique, reverse applique, heat manipulation
  • Design movements eras - Art Deco, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Nouveau, Swinging 60's
  • Other areas - Archetectire - Angiolo Mazzoni, Antonio Sant'Elia, The culture of Japan, The Great war, Make do and mend

By the end of week 1 you should be able to present to your class a series of A3 boards (no less than 5, no more than 10) that reflect your current interests in fashion design.

(this will make it easy for us to find)

Publish a short post to say who you are and what you are studying (Textiles Deign at ST Bedes)

This will make a major part of your evaluation and reflection on your work in progress as the term progresses.
